Unlocking the Future of Vehicle Maintenance: Insights from the Connected Vehicle Field Test 4.0

Connected vehicle technologies, driven by advanced telematics, sensors, and communication systems, are transforming the automotive industry by generating vast data on vehicle performance, driver behavior, and environmental conditions. This data enables services like remote diagnostics.

From March 2024 to March 2025, CARUSO Dataplace conducted the Connected Vehicle Field Test (CVFT) 4.0 to evaluate the real-world potential of remote diagnostics in the Independent Automotive Aftermarket (IAM). Collaborating with partners like Bosch, global one automotive GmbH, Hella Gutmann, Niterra, Schaeffler, ZF Group, and workshops such as Revolte and Autoservice Mamic, the test aimed to assess remote diagnostics’ effectiveness compared to traditional methods and gauge workshop acceptance.

Objectives

The primary objective of CVFT 4.0 was to assess the effectiveness of remote diagnostics compared to traditional diagnostics, focusing on data availability, quality, and the ability to deliver actionable insights for workshops within the IAM. This involved conducting practical tests with a number of vehicles to compare the diagnostic outcomes of remote methods against traditional diagnostics, ensuring that remote diagnostics could meet the accuracy and reliability standards required by workshops. A key component of this objective was to evaluate the potential of remote diagnostics to identify issues correctly, reduce diagnostic times, and improve repair accuracy, thereby demonstrating its value to the IAM and providing OEMs with insights into how to better support neutral data access for the IAM.

A second objective was to test the acceptance of remote diagnostics, particularly from the perspective of workshops, and car owners which play a critical role in the adoption of connected vehicle technologies.
